Comprehensive Eye Exam

Do I need a comprehensive eye exam?

Have you ever considered why you need to check your eyes regularly, even when there are no apparent eye problems? At Cliffside Park Eye Associates, we believe in a proactive approach to healthy vision.

Early Detection of Eye Health Conditions

Many eye conditions develop slowly and can show no symptoms until the problem has become more advanced. Therefore, a yearly eye exam provides critical information about your health. A comprehensive eye exam aids in the early detection of these eye conditions and many more health-related problems, including:

  • Aneurysm
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Lupus
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Stroke
  • Thyroid disease
  • Vascular disease

Early detection can make a difference in how many eye health issues are treated and can stop or slow the progression of vision loss.

Your Aging Vision

It’s no secret that our vision changes as we age. Sometimes, those changes can be challenging to track or even notice. You might make lifestyle modifications to address vision changes, like increasing the lighting in some parts of your home, using non-prescription “readers,” or avoiding driving at night. The right pair of prescription eyeglasses could improve your quality of life.

What to Expect From Your Comprehensive Eye Exam

During a comprehensive eye exam, our team will review your personal and family medical history and any medications and supplements you might be taking.

Visual Acuity

Dr. Van Vinciguerra will also check your visual acuity using a phoropter and an eye chart. This part of the exam focuses on your prescription and helps to identify what type of corrective prescription best suits your needs.

Glaucoma & Retina Exam

Our team will also perform a glaucoma screening to measure your eye’s pressure and a retina exam to evaluate the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels in the back of the eye. These tests can help us detect the development of glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, or retinal detachments.

A comprehensive eye examination is an essential part of your overall health. At Cliffside Park Eye Associates, you will find a compassionate and experienced team dedicated to providing high-quality, personalized eye care for your entire family.

When should I get an eye exam?

Our practice recommends a yearly comprehensive eye exam to review your eye health and visual acuity. Patients with medical conditions with a higher risk of eye health problems like diabetes, a family history of glaucoma, or a previous traumatic eye injury may need more frequent eye exams. If it’s been a few years since you’ve had a comprehensive eye exam, schedule an appointment today.
